Name or Number?

It's nice to work in a 10,000 employee company which has its offices in over 55 countries. Knowing that you make a very marginal difference to the company, not so nice. When it comes to a job, big isn't always better. In fact, an emerging company can offer far more in terms of financial prospects, recognition and work satisfaction as compared to a large corporate.

Consider these:

  • What are the chances that in a large company you can be rewarded with an 80% raise?
  • How possible is it that you can walk up to your boss and suggest ideas which would alter the company's strategy?
  • What's the approximate time in which your company can find your replacement? (Most people say 30 mins!)
  • What are the chances your name is going to appear on your company's website?
  • How much time do you need to be in your company before you can suggest improvements in the style of working?
  • Honestly, what ARE the chances you are actually going to BUILD something rather than maintain it?

Larger companies are where underachievers can hide and at the same time performers can get overlooked. In other words, you can get lost in the crowd. An emerging company treats you solely on merit. Your performance is immediately acknowledged and rewarded. Larger companies need you to do what is told and not tell others what to do. An emerging company invites your suggestions. Here it's actually worth thinking about an idea because you know someone's going to listen to it. A large company looks at you as a number. An emerging company is proud to call you by your name.

Where you wish to be is to do with your personality. If you wish to be obedient, repetitive and anonymous, then maybe the 10,000 employee company is where you should be. If you wish to be creative, trendsetting and recognized, then an emerging company, Zamtek, is the place to be.

So what do you want to be - a name or a number?
